Father Bala
Rev. Fr. Bala Anthony Govindu – A Journey of Faith and Service Rev. Fr. Bala Anthony Govindu was born on December 21, 1982, in India. At the tender age of13, he felt the call of God to the priesthood, a vocation that would become his life’s purpose. He began serving the Church as an altar server at St. Mary’s Cathedral, his home parish, where he dedicated eight formative years of service. This pivotal experience deepened his faith and inspired him to join the St. Joseph’s Missionaries of Mill Hill immediately after completing his12th grade. Father Bala’s priestly formation was both comprehensive and transformative. His first yearfocused on learning English, followed by a second year of spiritual formation. He then undertookthree rigorous years of academic study, earning a Bachelor’s in Philosophy, Economics, andHistory. However, the journey to priesthood is one of thoughtful discernment, and Father Balachose to take a year off to seek clarity about his vocation. During that time, he served with theSalesians of Don Bosco, where he worked on an island devastated by the 2004 tsunami.Witnessing the suffering and resilience of the affected communities was a profound, life-changing experience that strengthened his commitment to serving others.Following this year of discernment, Fr. Bala resumed seminary life, where he was invited toteach English to seminarians for a year. He was then sent to Uganda, Africa, for a missionexperience that profoundly shaped his ministry. In Uganda, he worked with indigenouscommunities who lived primitive lifestyles, learning their language and culture so he couldeffectively share the message of Christ and the Catholic faith. His efforts to understand and adaptto their way of life exemplified his missionary spirit and his pastoral care for marginalized and underserved communities. After his time in Uganda, Fr. Bala returned to Kenya to continue his theological studies at Nairobi’s Theological Institute. However, after much prayer and reflection, he discerned a calling to be a diocesan priest rather than a missionary. In 2010, he left the Mill Hill Missionaries and, with the support of Fr. Prem Thumma, was accepted as a seminarian for the Diocese of San Angelo under the guidance of Bishop Michael Pfeifer. Fr. Bala arrived in the Diocese of San Angelo in 2011 and continued his formation at the Oblate School of Theology in San Antonio, Texas, where he earned his Master of Divinity degree. During his studies, he completed a year of internship under Msgr. Bob Bush and was ordained as a transitional deacon at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Abilene, Texas. On January 3,2015, Fr. Bala was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Michael Sis at Sacred Heart Cathedral in San Angelo, beginning a new chapter in his life of service to God and His people. Fr. Bala’s priestly ministry has been marked by dedication, humility, and an unwavering commitment to his parishioners. Following his ordination, he was assigned as parochial vicar at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church under Msgr. James Bridges. He also served at St. Joseph’s and St. Anthony’s Churches under Fr. Frank Chavez, and later as a parochial administrator at St. Joseph’s in San Angelo. He became the pastor of St. Charles in Eden, Millers view, and Eola ,before returning to St. Stephen’s Parish, where he began his first appointment. In January 2025, Fr. Bala joyfully celebrated his 10th Anniversary of Priesthood, a testament to his unwavering commitment to God and the Church. Throughout his ministry, he has been blessed with numerous gifts, including healing, deliverance, preaching, fundraising, and construction projects for his communities. His healing Masses have drawn thousands, bringing spiritual and physical renewal to parishes across ten U.S. states and in Delicias, Mexico, where one Mass alone welcomed 3,000 participants. Fr. Bala also serves as a spiritual guide for pilgrims, leading groups to some of the world’s most sacred sites, including Europe, the Holy Land, and Mexico. These pilgrimages offer participants
a unique opportunity to deepen their faith and connect meaningfully with the history and traditions of the Catholic Church. Today, Fr. Bala continues to joyfully serve God and His people, bringing faith, hope, and healing wherever he is called. His journey from a small town in India to the Diocese of San Angelo stands as a testament to the power of faith, perseverance, and an unwavering reliance on God’s grace, “The Lord has blessed me abundantly and entrusted me with the mission to bring His love and healing to those in need. I am grateful for the privilege of serving Him and His people.” – Fr.
Bala Anthony Govindu
